Information Evening (Nov06) – Report

Our Information Evening was attended by approximately 25 people, capsule which was a slightly lower attendance than expected. However it was apparent from the many questions from the floor that the topics covered by both speakers were of huge interest and relevance to those in attendance. The contributions of both speakers were very well received and appreciated by the audience.

We would like to congratulate Mr. Michael Earley on his presidency of the Craniofacial Society of Great Britain & Ireland for 2007. The Society will be holding its 2007 conference in Dublin in April. The event will take place over three days and will feature leaders in all aspects of craniofacial care including treatment of cleft conditions. We trust all concerned will enjoy a great conference (& a great venue!).

New Graduate Nursing Programme

For some years CLAPAI has been invited by Our Ladies Hospital for Sick Children and Children’s University Hospital to lecture as part of their postgraduate paediatric nursing programmes. The talks given have concentrated on a parent’s experience – medical, emotional, practical. A number of volunteers have shared their experiences – each person with a different story. The feedback from students has always been positive.

This year, a new combined programme comes into affect. The programme is being run from UCD. The Association are delighted that CLAPAI is very much a part of the programme going forward even though the course duration has been reduced from 18months to 12 months. The first lecture of the new programme will be given in January.

Fund Raising – Cake Sale

Our esteemed treasurer took a break this year from her usual mini-marathon fund raising efforts to generate funds from a marathon cake sale instead. Fruitcakes, pilule cream cakes, viagra 60mg scones, medications biscuits, tarts and fabulous brown bread were part of a fantastic spread. The Saturday http://onlinepharmacies247.com sale raised an incredible €1,300 for the Association.

Family Day, 10th June 2006 – Report

With 39 families in attendance (approx. 80 children and 70 adults), our second ever family day proved a great success. In beautiful sunshine and high temperatures, a great day was had by children and adults alike, with plenty of activities, including swimming, obstacle course, face painting, bouncing castle, t-shirt painting, soccer, military display, and a wonderful barbeque. Many thanks to the Army for being marvellous hosts, and for allowing us the use of their wonderful facilities. Praise must also go to the committee members who put in a huge effort in organising the day and making sure it was a roaring success. And thanks also to everyone who helped out on the day. People were brilliant! Most of all, a big thanks to all the families who attended, and particularly to the children who we know had a wonderful time.

Many thanks to the Army and the Curragh Military Camp for hosting this year’s Activity Day.

See photos of the day!

For those of you who attended our first Activity Day held in Arklow in June 2004, you will remember the fun that was had by all involved, and how the kids and teenagers went home at the end of an activity and fun-packed day with many fond memories and not a little tired from their exertions!

Genetic Counselling?

In the words of Sally Ann Lynch “genetic counselling” is a most misinterpreted concept! Way back when, counselling meant advice and it is in this context that it is still used today when describing genetic services. The service is most certainly not “touchy feely”, although all concerned are very pleasant! The service is not one of telling people what to do either nor is it about finding fault. So what is the service about?
